Finding Me: A Memoir by Viola DavisPublished April 26, 2022An Oprah Book Club PickIn my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever。This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond。 This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn't always see me。As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of ho Finding Me: A Memoir by Viola DavisPublished April 26, 2022An Oprah Book Club PickIn my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever。This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond。 This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn't always see me。As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination。 We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world。 So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love。 For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be 。 。 。 you。Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self。 My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you。https://abcnews。go。com/GMA/Culture/vi。。。 。。。more

Christie,
I cannot remember the last time I devoured a memoir like This one。 I initially purchased the audiobook because Viola Davis read it herself but yesterday I grabbed the hardcover too because there were so many lines I wanted to re-read, underline, and write out on sticky notes to post all over the house。 Run yourself to the book store and grab a copy。 Even if you loved Viola Davis before, I promise you after finishing the first chapter you will adore her for her strength, her honesty, her wisdom, I cannot remember the last time I devoured a memoir like This one。 I initially purchased the audiobook because Viola Davis read it herself but yesterday I grabbed the hardcover too because there were so many lines I wanted to re-read, underline, and write out on sticky notes to post all over the house。 Run yourself to the book store and grab a copy。 Even if you loved Viola Davis before, I promise you after finishing the first chapter you will adore her for her strength, her honesty, her wisdom, and her resilience。 Trauma survivors will feel an instant connection to a woman who had repeated traumas and kept clawing her way forward。 Davis slowly unpeels the onion of her life and let’s us watch as she connects the dots。 Absolutely my favorite read of the year。 Cannot wait to dissect this book with friends。 。。。more
Nyemale,
I rarely read memoirs - most don’t hold my attention - but I couldn’t put this down。 Viola is an amazing story teller。 Raw, authentic and not afraid to show all aspects of her human existence。 I laughed, I cried, was enthralled and inspired。 It was of course about her journey to Hollywood, but even more her story of healing and intentionally living。 I highly recommend。
Pat Lawrence Craig,
I absolutely could not put this audio down! Viola shares intimate details of her life。 Having the book read in her voice made her journey so much more personal。 In her story, we are metaphorically walking in her shoes experiencing her horrible lows and her extraordinary highs! This is one captivating audiobook that I wished was much longer。
Jennifer,
Honest。 Unflinching。 Devastating。 Powerful。 Tender。 Highly recommend listening to Ms。 Davis’ narration。 Her fervency is incredibly moving。
Cheryl Lucanegro,
Fascinating- what an amazing person
Mujer4christ,
I have loved Viola Davis's work for a long time now, this work of art made me love her more!! I can only imagine the courage it takes to write about not only your past and how you must survive it, but how it forms you, how it's still a part of who you are, and how you must do the work to find healing from it! This was also fantastic as an audio book because she narrates it herself and her voice is also amazing! I have loved Viola Davis's work for a long time now, this work of art made me love her more!! La-Toya,
Heartbreaking, healing, inspiring。 Viola laid herself bare in this memoir and I could not look away。 She forced me to see the harsh reality of being raised in poverty, the life-long journey of healing and her courage to rise above。 Beautifully written with moments that gave pause for personal reflection, a stellar memoir。
Ginger Gantt,
I was transformed, transfixed and transferred throughout this entire book。 What an amazing journey Viola Davis has taken and what an awesome blessing she is to us all in so many ways。 I want to thank her for sharing her story and her gifts。 BRAVO
Fatimah Omar,
As a fan of the actress, I wanted to know her story。 She showed us the woman off the stage, she revealed her true identity and she is far more powerful and loving and beautiful than you can imagine。 Viola delivers the raw, unvarnished truth of her life in a completely unapologetic way。 I loved every moment of her story。 As a dark-skinned, 70 year old woman who can still vividly feel the pain of my 8-year old self sitting in a white world, Ms。 Davis captured my heart。 I literally could not stop l As a fan of the actress, I wanted to know her story。 She showed us the woman off the stage, she revealed her true identity and she is far more powerful and loving and beautiful than you can imagine。 Viola delivers the raw, unvarnished truth of her life in a completely unapologetic way。 I loved every moment of her story。 As a dark-skinned, 70 year old woman who can still vividly feel the pain of my 8-year old self sitting in a white world, Ms。 Davis captured my heart。 I literally could not stop listening and reading this book。 Her performance was masterful and beyond entertaining。 This is by far, the best memoir I have ever read because of the truth she put on every page。 Life is complicated and she made us see who she is and why she is the artistic master of her craft。 。。。more

Sharon Boyd,
Finding me is a revealing memoir by award winning and my favorite Viola Davis。 I truly picked it up the release day because I just adore her。 Her memoir is full of heartbreak and success。 I have read that it is her hope that her story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you。。。。。。。。。。this book has the power to do just that。
Daniella,
It feels weird to rate someone’s life story。 I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Viola herself and of course it was a beautiful performance。 Her story is rich, real, full of fear, violence, love, and holding oneself。
Veronica Broyles,
I tried to read this book in pieces, I COULD NOT! This was such a captivating and amazing story。 Her childhood made her bite for what she strives for in her life today。 She loved her upbringing and her parents but she always knew it was trouble in paradise。 She worked hard as an adult and channeled that children pain into a promising future。 I promise if you pick it up, it will be like rat glue in your hands( read the book, you will understand)!I would give this book ten stars!

This has got to be my favorite read of the year。 I loved Viola Davis before, but now I’m IN love with her。 The immense respect and admiration I have for her is deep。 The things she endured as a kid, teen, woman—period。 I can honestly say that I’ve never experienced。 I’ve never missed a meal for days。 I’ve never had to lie in my own urine and go to school the next day reeking。 I’ve never had to fight with huge rats over my bed & pillow。 I’ve never witness my father beat my mom within an inch of h This has got to be my favorite read of the year。 I loved Viola Davis before, but now I’m IN love with her。 The immense respect and admiration I have for her is deep。 The things she endured as a kid, teen, woman—period。 I can honestly say that I’ve never experienced。 I’ve never missed a meal for days。 I’ve never had to lie in my own urine and go to school the next day reeking。 I’ve never had to fight with huge rats over my bed & pillow。 I’ve never witness my father beat my mom within an inch of her life and I’ve never experienced racism on the level that Viola has for being too dark。 What she went through for being dark skinned, what her mom went through as a child。。absolutely horrific。 “Memories are immortal。 They’re deathless and precise。 They have the power of giving you joy and perspective in hard times。 Or, they can strangle you。 Define you in a way that’s based more in other people’s tucked-up perceptions than truth。”The colorism she experienced in the acting world and how they tried to “mold and shape” her into the perfect “white” author。 I love how she explained what Shonda Rhimes did for her in creating HTGAWM role for her and the healing that came from that。 “Annalise Keating released in me the obstacles blocking me from realizing my worth and power as a woman。”“As Black women, we are complicated。 We are feminine。 We are sexual。 We are beautiful。 We’re pretty。 There are people out there who desire us。 We are deserving。 So that’s why I’m very aware of what my presence means。 And that’s why I’m also aware of why I need to be emotionally healthy。 Because that’s a lot of responsibility。 Because you’re coming up against a four-hundred-year-old narrative。” How to Get Away with Murder was where my radical transformation took place。 In the course of playing Annalise, I understood that I was no longer and never was that ugly Black nigga。 The role liberated me。 I said to myself: All I’ve got is me。 And that is enough。 。。。more

Similar vitriol followed me from childhood, and into adulthood。 It defined me for years。 It poisoned my spirit。 It affected the way I saw myself and my relationships, and how I entered the world each day。 On just about every chapter, I kept writing notes such as, "Me too!" So many experiences in the book are similar to mine, such as the trip to Africa (I visited Senegal as well as the Cape Verde Island of Santiago, instead of The Gambia, in 2014), having a teacher "see" me well enough to believe I could excel in life, Colorism in my predominantly African American neighborhood, and not feeling good enough。 I believed what they said。 I internalized it。 It took me years to believe in my worth and experience selflove。 Once in a while there are triggers。 But the human spirit is resilient! I thank God every day for the life I have today。 And thank you, Viola Davis, for having the courage to share your story。 Everyone always thinks they are the only one going through this。 We are not alone。 Thank you, Oprah!
